Saldanha Bay
Published: 01/23/2009 by Johan Rademan
There are numerous small fishing villages, holiday resorts and seaside towns. This region is known for its scenic beauty and abundant sea life.
Saldanah Bay is situated on the Cape west coast, north of Cape Town. Saldanha would have been the main port in stead of Cape Town were it not for the scarcity of fresh drinking water. It is still considered to be one of the top 10 natural harbours in the world.
Table Bay was originally called Saldanah Bay, but the Dutch renamed it in the 17 century. Antonio de Saldanha, a Portuguese admiral who visited Cape Town in 1503 never dropped anchor in the northern port that was named after him. A Must see!
